There is a large space in the middle of the fans which is a perfect place to add quilting or embroidery.
The Starmaker 5 is used to cut perfect wedge shapes. Fabric needed:
|
| Step 1: Cut strips for the fans
Cut a 4 x 9" strip from each of 5 fabrics. Step 2: Cut the strips into wedges. Use the Starmaker 5 to cut the wedges - 4 from each of the 5 strips. Place the line below the 20 on the Starmaker 5 at the top of the strip. Rotary cut on both sides of the Starmaker 5. Turn the Starmaker 5 upside down to cut the second wedge; the line below the 20 should be at the bottom of the strip. |

Step 3: Sew the pieces into a fan.
Sew one of each of the 5 wedges into a fan. Match the top and bottom of the peices as they are sewn together. Press the seam allowances all in one direction. |
| Step 4: Sew lace to the fans
Sew the lace to both curved edges of the fan, right sides together, with the gathered edge of the lace even with the outside edge of the pieced fan. Press the lace on the larger curve away from the fan. Press the lace on the smaller curve toward the fan, so turn the seam allowances of the fan and lace to the wrong side of the fan; press and topstitch 1/8" from the seam, through the fan and both seam allowances. |
Step 5: Sew the fans to the 12-1/2" x 12-1/2" square Lay the fans on the square so the ends of the fans line up with the edges of the square. Pin the fans in place. Topstitch through the lace close to the fan. |
