Victorian Nosegay Block from the Strip Quilting Projects Book 9 Sampler Quilt by Kaye Wood

This nosegay is made from squares and diagonal half-squares. - The Starmaker 8 insure accurate half-squares every time.

Fabric/Supplies needed:

  • Starmaker 8
    Green Fabric - 12" x 12" square
    Cream Fabric - 1/3 yd
    Burgundy Fabric - 12" x 12" square
    Dark Mauve Solid - 12" x 12" square
Lace and ribbons - 15" of each

Step 1: Cut Bias Strips

Place the Starmaker 8 squared up with one corner of the fabric. Use a rotary cutter to make the first cut along the long diagonal edge of the Starmaker 8. From the small triangle of fabric, cut 2-3/4" line on the ruler even with the bias edge of the triangle.

From bias strip #1 you can get 5 triangles
From bias strip #2 you can get 3 triangles
From bias strip #3 you can get 1 triangle

Step 2: Sew Bias Strips Together

Sew two bias strips, right sides together, into a tube (sew together on both long edges.) Use the Starmaker 8 to cut the bias tubes into triangles by placing the 4 point of the Starmaker 8 at the top of the strip and cutting on both sides. the second triangle by turning the Starmaker 8 upside down so the 4 point is at the bottom of the strip.

Continue cutting until you have the correct number of each of the diagonal half-squares (see below). Open up the triangles (you may have to remove two or three stitches at the point). Press the seam allowances toward the darkest fabric .

Sew the following bias strips together:

  • 1. Sew a green and cream strip - Cut 4 diagonal half squares
  • 2. Sew a floral and cream strip - Cut 2 diagonal half squares
  • 3. Sew a floral and dark mauve strip - Cut 2 diagonal half squares
  • 4. Sew a dark mauve and cream strip - Cut 2 diagonal half squares
  • 5. Sew a floral and green strip - Cut 2 diagonal half squares

Step 3: Cut Squares

Cut a strip of cream 3-1/2" x 15".
Cut this strip into 4 squares 3-1/2" x 3- 1/2".

Step 4: Lay out the Squares and Half Squares

Sew the pieces together into rows carefully matching seamlines. Press the seam allowances of the rows in opposite directions. (row 1 and 3 to the left; row 2 and 4 to the right.)

Step 5: Add Embellishments

Add lace, ribbons, old buttons, etc. to make your Victorian Nosegay special. Your nosegay will also make an attractive pillow, or make a Nosegay quilt using different colors in each block.
