Finished Size 58" x 58"

Total Yardage needed:

  • 1/3 yd of each of 5 shades of pink
  • 1/3 yd of each of 5 shades of green
  • Background fabric: 1-1/4 yds
  • Backing fabric: 62" x 62"
  • Batting: 62" x 62"
Step 1: Choose fabrics:
  • 5 fabrics from two different color families (a total of 10 fabrics) - include large prints, small prints, and solids; dark, medium and light shades.

Step 2: Cut 2" x 44/45" from each of the 10 fabrics. You will need 4 of each of the pinks and 2 of each of the greens.

Step 3: Sew 5 strips together, from the lightest to the darkest shades, into combination strips.

  • First combination strip - 5 strips from one color family:

  • Second combination strip - 5 fabrics from another color family

Step 5: Cut your combination strips into 2 strips of squares.

Each combination strip = 20 strips of squares

Cut 76 pink strips of squares

Cut 38 green strips of squares

Step 6: Cut 4 2" squares (A) from the darkest pink and the darkest green

Cut and sew together 9: long strips for each (B, C, D, and E) of these 2" specialty combination strips form both the green and pink fabrics:

  • A - 4 2" squares from darkest fabric
  • B - 4 3 strip combination: #5 (darkest), #4, #5 (darkest)
  • C - 4 5 strip combination: #5 (darkest), #4, #3, #4, #%
  • D - 4 7 strip combination:: #5 (darkest), #4, #3, #2, #3, #4, #5
  • E - 4 9 strip combination: #5, #4, #3, #2, #1 (lightest), #2, #3, #4, #5
  • #5 is always the darkest color
  • #4 is not quite as dark
  • #3 is a medium color
  • #2 is a little lighter
  • #1 is always the lightest
Step 7: Cut the following lengthwise strips 2" wide for the background color:

Note: lengthwise strips are necessary for these long pieces so the background will not stretch.

Center strip - no background

  • 1st strips from center cut 4 2" squares (2 squares for each strip)
  • 2nd strips from center cut 4 4" pieces
  • 3rd strips from center cut 4 5-1/2" pieces
  • 4th strips from center cut 4 7" pieces
  • 5th strips form center cut 4 8-1/2" pieces
  • 6th strips from center cut 4 10" pieces
  • 7th strips from center cut 4 11-1/2" pieces
  • 8th strips from center cut 4 13" pieces
  • 9th strips from center cut 4 14-1/2" pieces
  • 10th strips from center cut 4 16" pieces
  • 11th strips from center cut 4 17-1/2" pieces
  • 12th strips from center cut 4 19" pieces
  • 13th strips from center cut 4 20-1/2" pieces
  • 14th strips from center cut 4 22" pieces
Step 8: Lay out the design using the strip of squares cut from each of the combination strips. Add the specialy strips. Add the background pieces.

Step 9: Sew the pieces together into vertical rows. Press the seam allowances.

Step 10: Sew the rows together, matching seamlines. Press the seam allowances all in one direction.

Step 11: Square up the wallhanging by using the Starmaker 8 or any ruler; keep one side even with top or bottom of the center strip; the other side of the Starmaker 8 should be on a seamline between two background strips.

Add any borders and a sleeve if desired.
