Memorial Day….

Memorial Day was established to honor U.S. men and women, who have died during military service for our country. It first began to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. The first “proclaimed” Memorial Day, was on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan. The first Memorial Day “observance”, was on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of both the Union and Confederate soldiers, at Arlington National Cemetery. After WWI, it expanded to include those who have died in any war or military action, while serving our country. Memorial Day should be important to all of us who enjoy freedom, but it especially hits home to the people who have lost a loved one, while serving our country. If you have kids or grandkids, make sure you tell them about Memorial Day, how it started and why it is celebrated. Tell them about the brave men and women who gave up their lives in the past and still do today, to ensure we have the freedoms we all enjoy, and sometimes take for granted.

Tips and Humor From Kaye….

Pressing For Accuracy

Pressing is different from ironing. Pressing is done in two different ways;

an up-ad-down motion to set the seams
and moving the iron with the grain line to press the seam allowances.

Pressing for accurate patchwork should be done:

1. WITHOUT steam. Steam can stretch and distort the fabric.
2. From the right side of the fabric. This will avoid pleats that form at the seamline.

Setting seams

This means pressing the seamline exactly as the seam was sewn. This sets the stitches in the middle of the fabric and makes a sharper seamline.

Rolling the strips

Pressing from the right side of the fabric can be done by rolling the strips.

1. Place the iron on the strip that will not have the seam allowances pressed toward it.
2. Hold the other strip or strips up in the air.
3. Move the iron from the first strip across to the other strips, unrolling the strips as you press across them.

Once the seams are pressed in one direction, make sure they stay in that direction during the sewing process.

Sometimes my techniques call for the direction of the seam allowance to be temporarily changed to help match seams; but, before sewing, the seam allowance is returned to it’s pressed direction.
