Some of the projects found in Kaye's book, Strip Cut Quilts:

Emeralds And Amythysts

Kaye has once again brought her popular techniques to this 96 page book for easy and accurate quiltmaking.

23 quilt block techniques, made into 30 different quilt projects, are all easily made with her Starmaker 8 Master Template. As she does in most of her books, she starts with projects for the Pointless People, her friends who prefer not to try to match points.

Before we begin on the projects, she stresses her techniques for accurate pressing

  • setting the seam
  • pressing with the grainline of the fabric to avoid stretching
  • pressing from the right side of the fabric to eliminate pleats
  • and No steam (it stretches the fabric)

Strip cutting and size triangles with the 4 angle of the Starmaker 8 Master Template is shown in detail, including: how to decide on the width of the strips and the different shapes that can be cut by just moving the Starmaker higher on the strip. Accuracy of the triangles is insured by keeping the horizontal lines on the Starmaker parallel the the seamlines and by using Static Stickers to mark the Starmaker.

Detailed diagrams show you the techniques for matching seamlines. Tube sewing is used in several projects; this gives you different combinations of triangles and speeds up the process. Scraps or fat quarters can be used for several projects. Topless Triangles are easy to cut using the Starmaker 8 Master Template and are used in some of the quilts.

In each chapter, Kaye introduces a block and the techniques for making the block; then several different projects are made using that block. Blocks, named after the strips that were cut into triangles, include:

  • Horizontal/Solid Triangles
  • Horizontal Triangles
  • Random (scraps) Horizontal Triangles,
  • Spool blocks
  • Random (scrap) Vertical/Horizontal Triangles
  • Horizontal and Vertical Fussy-cut Triangles
  • Divided triangles
  • Fussy-cut Diamonds and Trees

Finishing techniques include squaring up quilt blocks, chain-stitching short sashing strips, pin-marking long sashing strips, mitered borders, eyelet edging, envelope finish, hanging sleeve, layering the quilt, complete binding directions including Kaye's Quick-fold and her mitered corners.

Projects include

  • wallhangings
  • tablerunners
  • small quilts
  • quilts
  • reversible banners
  • and a few Christmas projects

Kaye's original technique for cutting and sewing Flying Geese has been named by teachers and quilters everywhere as an incredible addition to quiltmaking. It combines triangles and topless triangles, all cut with the Starmaker 8 Master Template "This is worth the price of the book even without all the other great projects and techniques-you can make any size, it wastes no fabric, and it is so easy and accurate."
